There are a ton of great trainers in Richmond VA. Trust me, over the years, I have had a chance to work with some of the best. We seem to have a tight knit little community here in Richmond. But not all trainers are created equal. Before signing up with a trainer, do your homework and request 1-2 free sessions so you can get a feel for his/her training style. Here are 4 important things to look for in a personal trainer:
1.) Education/Experience: Make sure the trainer is certified through a reputable organization and has either a 4 year degree in the field or a ton of related experience. Don't be afraid to ask questions and expect questions in return. Your trainer should want to know about you in order to establish a great relationship and design a safe and effective workout that best suits your needs and fitness goals.
2.) Communication: Good communication is a must! Your trainer should be able to communicate things to you in a way that you understand and makes you feel comfortable. They should also get back to you in a timely manner when you call or send emails. After all, you are paying a lot of money for their services.
3.) Professionalism: You can tell a lot about any person by the way they carry themselves. You want to have fun and have a good relationship but there is a fine line. If you and your trainer "talk" more than you "work" or your trainer is constantly texting or talking to other people during your workout, that might be a warning sign that they are not very invested in helping you reach your goals.
4.) Personality: This is often overlooked when choosing a trainer. You should be able to tell after a couple of session if you and your trainer are going to mesh well (hence the reason for requesting 1-2 free sessions). Not every client / trainer are meant to be together. Hold out on purchasing a package until you are sure that you have found a good fit.
There you have it. Find those 4 things in a personal trainer and you have probably found yourself a keeper!
